Frequently Asked
Questions

Everything you need to know about international pet travel, quarantine, and compliance.

General & Planning

Do I need to hire a pet relocation company?
Hiring a pet relocation company is not strictly required for most countries, but it can significantly reduce stress and the risk of simple paperwork errors. However, some airlines (like British Airways or Qantas) require you to work with an IPATA member agent to book pet cargo.
How much does it cost to move a pet internationally?
Costs vary wildly based on distance and pet size, but expect to pay between $2,000 and $8,000 USD. This includes vet visits, crates, international flight cargo fees (often calculated by volumetric weight), and import permits.

Flights & Logistics

Can my pet fly in the cabin with me?
Generally, no, for long-haul international flights to rabies-free countries (like Australia, UK, Japan). Airlines have strict policies. However, for travel within the EU or US, smaller pets (under 8kg incl. carrier) can often travel in the cabin.
What is the 5-day rule for EU travel?
For non-commercial movement of pets to the EU, the animal must travel within 5 days of the owner's movement. If the gap is longer, the move becomes classified as 'commercial', requiring different paperwork and often VAT payments on the value of the pet.
